Bill Gates urges immediate international collaboration between the United States and China to establish shared norms for artificial intelligence development, warning of significant societal risks if action is delayed.
In a bold statement, Gates asserts that AI is ushering in “one of the most turbulent times in human history,” capable of either becoming “the greatest equaliser ever invented or the worst source of injustice.” He stresses that leading AI developers and nations controlling critical supply chains must act now to prevent strategic divergence as competitive pressures intensify.
“The framework for global AI governance will require years to build,” Gates emphasizes, underscoring the urgency of initiating discussions immediately to ensure ethical and equitable progress.
Expanding further in his comprehensive 6,000-word analysis, the Microsoft co-founder cautions that world leaders are unprepared for the AI revolution, a transition distinct from historical technological shifts due to its unprecedented speed and transformative potential. “This time really is different,” he writes.
