Connor Bedard’s tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks has officially been secured through the 2030-31 season, as the franchise and the dynamo forward have agreed to a five-year contract extension with a $15 million average annual value.

The agreement represents a strategic win for both the organization and Bedard. Chicago has preserved its cornerstone player heading into the upcoming seasons, while Bedard has established a lucrative long-term foundation that positions him optimally for his career trajectory.
Blackhawks Lock in “Elite” Bedard
General manager Kyle Davidson announced the extension by stating, “Connor has continuously defied our expectations since being drafted, and has quickly established himself as an elite player in the NHL.”
That assessment understates Bedard’s meteoric rise. The 21-year-old has already captured the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie and earned All-Star recognition, while leading the Blackhawks in scoring during each of his three full seasons with the club.
Bedard’s most recent campaign showcased his elite status, as he ranked among the league’s top three scorers alongside Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. A 13-game absence due to shoulder injury likely cost him a higher finish in the scoring race, but the performance reinforced his potential for even greater achievements.
The talent and production Bedard displays align precisely with what Chicago hoped to achieve when selecting him first overall in 2023. Beyond his on-ice contributions, his work ethic and leadership qualities have endeared him to teammates and coaching staff, suggesting he could soon assume the Blackhawks’ captaincy—a role the organization has long envisioned for him.
Contract Exchanges Benefits for Both Parties
The $15 million AAV falls well below some comparable extensions, such as the Anaheim Ducks’ five-year, $18 million offer sheet for center Leo Carlsson. This team-friendly structure leaves Chicago with approximately $14 million in salary cap flexibility heading into free agency, even accounting for Bedard’s expected four-month recovery from shoulder surgery.
The financial flexibility also positions the Blackhawks well for managing their upcoming wave of young talent, including prospects Wyatt Kaiser, Artyom Levshunov, and Oliver Moore, who will soon require new contracts of their own.
As the salary cap continues expanding, Bedard’s $15 million cap hit should become increasingly manageable relative to his production. His point totals have risen consistently each season, culminating in 75 points across 69 games last year. At 21, his prime years remain ahead of him, suggesting significant growth potential that could justify even higher compensation in his next contract cycle.

Both organizations benefit significantly from this agreement. Bedard has become the highest-paid player on the Blackhawks’ current roster, while the extension establishes a clear foundation for Chicago’s future direction.
According to reports from PuckPedia, Bedard’s contract includes a full no-movement clause in the final year of his deal, and his $9.8 million signing bonus—matching his jersey number 98—provides additional personality to the deal’s structure.
With this extension, the Blackhawks transition from rebuilding to competing, with Bedard positioned at the core of their championship aspirations. The organization believes maintaining his development trajectory will keep them relevant in the Western Conference for years to come.
Bedard has consistently expressed his desire to remain in Chicago and grow alongside his teammates. Now that the contract is finalized, the Blackhawks are enthusiastic about the possibilities this agreement creates for the franchise’s next chapter.
Davidson concluded his remarks by emphasizing, “He utilizes all aspects of his game to not only be a constant threat, but to make the players around him better every time he steps on the ice. Connor’s strong work ethic and determination to always improve his game has set an extraordinary standard for our young core, and we’re excited for the incredible impact he’ll have in this next chapter of Blackhawks hockey.”
