The Columbus Blue Jackets will face a significant setback heading into their 2026-27 season opener, as three of their top defensemen will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
Following their optional morning skate, head coach Rick Bowness provided updates on Ivan Provorov, Damon Severson and Dante Fabbro. Provorov’s injury proved particularly devastating for the organization.
Latest Injury Updates
Provorov sustained an injury after blocking a shot during the Blue Jackets’ final preseason game in Detroit. While he continued playing that night, he missed practice sessions throughout the week as the team awaited diagnostic results.
The organization received the worst-case scenario update, placing Provorov on injured reserve with a week-to-week designation.
Provorov’s consecutive games streak, which spanned 375 games, will come to an end. Thursday’s game will also mark the first time in his NHL career he’s missed a contest due to injury unrelated to COVID-19.
Coach Bowness expressed the impact of Provorov’s absence with a single, powerful descriptor.
“He’s a warrior,” Bowness said. “He’s just heartbroken that he’s not playing. It’s unreal. He would go to 20 doctors and just hopefully find one that would say you can play. It’s lower body, week-to-week and he’s heartbroken that he’s not playing.”

Regarding Severson and Fabbro, Bowness confirmed both are day-to-day. Severson continues his recovery from offseason surgery and is currently skating despite not participating in preseason games. Fabbro rehabilitates from a hand fracture, working through exercises but not yet ready for contact or stick work.
What This Means Near Term
The Blue Jackets will start the season with a completely reconfigured defensive unit against Buffalo. Carson Soucy will partner with Emil Andrae, who joined the team via the recent Matthew Knies/Kirill Marchenko trade. Andrae will need to adapt to the right side. Other pairings feature Zach Werenski with Denton Mateychuk and Jake Christiansen alongside Erik Gudbranson.
Facing the Sabres is challenging under any circumstances. Doing so without Provorov, Severson and Fabbro significantly increases the difficulty level.
Bowness addressed the defensemen on their upcoming responsibilities.
“You’re not going to have the same partner going on every night,” Bowness said. “You’re not going to be on the left side every time. You’re going to be moved around. That’s the challenge we face.”
Another consideration involves potential capacity constraints if injuries compound, which could force the Blue Jackets to explore additional roster moves within the LTIR framework and cap calculations.
This certainly isn’t the start every NHL team aspirations for the 2026-27 campaign. The early adversity will test how quickly Columbus responds to these challenges.
