Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ Surges in Streams During Historic Solar Eclipse

Born Gaynor Hopkins in a council house in Neath, Bonnie Tyler developed a passion for music before talent scout Roger Bell discovered her at a Swansea club.

Her early career began with the 1977 single “Lost in France,” but global stardom arrived in 1983 with the release of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a powerful ballad that topped the UK charts for two weeks and spent four weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The music video for the iconic love song has amassed over 1.2 billion views on YouTube, while the track has exceeded one billion streams on Spotify, solidifying its status as a timeless classic.

Spotify revealed that Tyler’s catalog generated over $1.4 million in 2025, with her song among a select group of “celestial” tracks experiencing notable UK streaming spikes during the 12 August solar eclipse.

The platform reported significant increases included Evolfo’s “Moon Eclipsed the Sun” (+12,817%), Chris Staples’ “Dark Side of the Moon” (+2,805%), and Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” (+594%), alongside Tyler’s own “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (+94%).

Shannon Carragher, Spotify’s senior editor, noted that major cultural events consistently influence UK listening habits, adding that “cultural phenomena like the solar eclipse naturally bring people together and we instinctively look for the perfect soundtrack to share that moment.”

Leading up to the eclipse, Tyler’s 2023 McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes advertisement—featuring the singer using a Jaffa Cake to explain eclipse types—resurfaced, coinciding with research showing 49% of Britons lacked basic understanding of eclipse mechanics.

In the advert, Tyler quipped, “There are three types of eclipse: lunar, solar, and total eclipse of the heart,” followed by a poetic explanation linking celestial phenomena to Earth’s shadow patterns.

Beyond “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler achieved fame with “Holding Out for a Hero” and represented the UK at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. She was honored with an MBE in the Queen’s 2022 Birthday Honours for services to music by Prince William in 2023.

Unexpectedly, Tyler died on 8 July at age 75 in a Portuguese hospital, reportedly from an undisclosed illness. Tributes from peers including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart poured in immediately following news of her passing.

Her funeral service is scheduled for 17 August at 12:00 BST at St Mary’s Church in Swansea, with her coffin to be brought to her Mumbles home on 15 August at 15:30 BST. Members of the public are invited to line Newton Road at 15:15 BST to pay their respects.
