Bootsy Collins Releases Memoir ‘Funked Around, Found Out’ Detailing Five Decades in Funk

Bootsy Collins has announced his debut memoir, set for release on March 23, 2027. Co‑written with pop‑culture historian Caseen Gaines, the aptly titled Funked Around, Found Out chronicles the 74‑year‑old funk icon’s five‑decade career.

The book traces how the Cincinnati‑born bass guitarist, alongside his brother Phelps “Catfish” Collins, began with The Pacemakers, later joined James Brown’s ensemble, and ultimately became part of George Clinton’s Parliament‑Funkadelic collective.

Beyond career highlights, the memoir offers behind‑the‑scenes anecdotes, including an incident when Collins was targeted by a member of the Florida Black Mafia Family after a one‑night stand, and a confrontation with the LAPD that mistakenly identified Parliament‑Funkadelic members as escaped convicts, leading to a controversial cavity search. The narrative also delves into Collins’s occasionally rocky friendship with Clinton and his tumultuous relationship with mentor James Brown, who famously fined Collins and other JB’s members for substandard performances. The foreword is provided by longtime collaborator Snoop Dogg.

In a statement, the bassist described the book as “the straight up, real deal. If I’m lyin’, I’m dyin’, and I ain’t ready to go yet.”
