SÃO PAULO — Air investigators in Brazil published their findings on Thursday regarding the fatal 2024 Voepass plane crash that killed 62 passengers and crew after the aircraft spiraled into the ground near Sao Paulo.
The investigation confirmed that severe atmospheric icing, combined with mechanical system malfunctions and crew distractions, led to the deadliest aviation disaster in Brazil since 2007.
The Voepass ATR 72-500 twin-turboprop aircraft crashed into a neighborhood in Vinhedo on August 9, 2024, resulting in no survivors.
The flight, which was traveling from Cascavel to Sao Paulo’s international airport, encountered extreme icing conditions while at a cruising altitude of roughly 17,000 feet, according to the probe. These conditions caused a critical loss of lift, sending the plane into an unrecoverable flat spin.
Data from the flight recorders indicated that the crew was aware of significant ice buildup on the fuselage. However, the de-icing equipment suffered repeated technical faults and was switched on and off multiple times during crucial stages of the flight.
Officials stated during a press briefing in Brasilia that a pattern of “normalizing deviations” existed within Voepass, with pre-existing mechanical issues—including known defects in the de-icing system—being overlooked prior to departure.
The investigators also found that the pilots were preoccupied with routine radio communication and paperwork during the icing emergency, delaying necessary recovery maneuvers until it was too late.
Authorities presented the final report to the families of the victims prior to its public release.
