Ahead of the fixture, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta stressed the importance of Bukayo Saka increasing his goal contributions, noting that higher shot volume would naturally elevate scoring probabilities.
Saka made an immediate impact against Lille with a composed one-touch finish, coming after he had spurned a late one-on-one chance in Arsenal’s Premier League win over Leeds.
Arteta highlighted Saka’s growing proficiency in dangerous areas, remarking on his ability to secure one-touch finishes and tap-ins, which adds a layer of unpredictability to Arsenal’s attack.
The manager urged Saka to adopt a mentality focused on scoring at a rate per game, believing that consistent positioning would lead to greater goal tallies, and noted that Saka could already have several more goals to his name.
Despite Saka’s season total of 20 goals being a career high only in 2023-24, he has maintained strong form for England, netting five goals in recent matches, including a brace against Croatia.
In European competitions, Saka has amassed 19 goals for Arsenal, trailing only Thierry Henry, while his nine Champions League assists place him behind Henry and Cesc Fabregas.
Arteta expressed satisfaction with Saka’s response to his public challenge, especially as the winger played through illness to deliver a crucial performance.
The Spaniard shared that he spoke with Saka after the press conference, jokingly acknowledging his comments, and praised Saka’s willingness to embrace challenges for self-improvement.
Arteta emphasized the need for Saka to set ambitious goals, work diligently, and maintain consistency, confident in his ability to overcome setbacks and excel.
