Many golfers believe they must develop their swing through lessons before being fitted for equipment. However, one of Asia’s leading club fitters challenges this assumption.

During a recent episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped podcast, host Johnny Wunder spoke with Eric Chung from Impact Golf in Malaysia about whether players can be properly fitted before receiving golf instruction.

“It’s such a good question because it remains largely misunderstood,” Chung explained. “In my view, an experienced fitter can assess where a player currently stands by evaluating hand-eye coordination and observing their natural movements. This allows us to reasonably anticipate their potential development in terms of swing speed and dynamic capabilities.”

Chung added that fitting customers with equipment they can grow into while developing their swing through lessons represents a viable approach.

Wunder noted that certain specifications, particularly lie angle, may require adjustment as a player’s technique improves over time.

Chung concurred but emphasized that not all situations demand the same approach.

“Tour-level professionals might offer a different perspective,” Chung acknowledged. “However, I’ve witnessed numerous instances where equipment modifications—such as transferring shafts into different heads—create subtle yet significant performance differences that feel entirely new to the player.”
