The fast-rising Oakland hardcore band Cell Rot introduced the first half of their ambitious two-part project, Parasite, last year. Recorded with legendary punk and metal producer Jack Shirley, the project continues as the band prepares to release the second half, Paradise. On the opening track and lead single, “Paradise/Parasite II,” the band explores the thin line between the two concepts, with vocalist Kyle growling, “Paradise! Searchin’ for your paradise! Parasite! You’re feedin’ like a parasite!”
A statement on Bandcamp further illuminates what they’re getting at:
Parasite is the first half of a longer project about consumption and decay. Parasites thrive in excess, searching for a paradise to consume. The luxuries of modern man have left the world depleted and inching closer to uninhabitable everyday. A world where the machines we produced have consumed the resources we need while we consume the world of the machines. The only thing that exists now is the parasite, who’s only purpose is to consume, leaving nothing while it waits for nothing to come.
