Charlie Cerrato Selected for 2026 NHLPA Rookie Showcase with Carolina Hurricanes

The 16th annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase is fast approaching, with the NHLPA and Upper Deck set to welcome the newest NHL prospects in Chicago, Illinois, from July 28 through July 30. Previously hosted at the Washington Capitals’ practice facility in Washington, D.C., the event will now be held at the Blackhawks Ice Center presented by Fifth Third Bank.

Alexander Nikishin donned the Hurricanes jersey last year ahead of his rookie campaign, and this year the honor falls to Charlie Cerrato, who will represent the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Cerrato Poised to Represent the Champion Hurricanes

Cerrato will join the next wave of prospects at the Chicago showcase next week during the NHLPA and Upper Deck event. The Hurricanes signed him to a three‑year entry‑level contract on May 12, following two seasons with Penn State.

He will be participating alongside the following prospects:

Trey Augustine & Carter Bear (DET), Kashawn Aitcheson & Cole Eiserman (NYI), Filip Bystedt & Quentin Musty (SJS), Sacha Boisvert & Roman Kanterov (CHI), Cole Hutson & Andrew Cristall (WSH), Gavin McKenna (TOR), Porter Martone (PHI), Justin Carbonneau (STL), Trevor Connelly (VGK), Liam Greentree (NYR), James Hagens (BOS), TJ Hughes (COL), Roger McQueen (ANA), Sam O’Reilly (TBL), and Bill Zonnon (PIT).

During his tenure with the Penn State Nittany Lions, Cerrato recorded 15 goals and 42 points in 38 games as a freshman (2024‑25), and added seven goals and 27 points in 23 games during his sophomore year. Across his college career he amassed 22 goals, 47 assists, and 69 points in 61 contests.

Cerrato finished second nationally among freshman skaters in points and assists for the 2024‑25 season. At that time he led all Big Ten rookies in goals, assists, and points, earning Big Ten All‑Freshman Team honors. Although his sophomore season was limited by a January injury, his overall performance indicates he is poised to make an impact at the professional level soon.

Prior to his college stint at Penn State, Cerrato played for the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League (USHL). With the Phantoms he notched 12 goals and 50 points over 45 games, finishing the 2023‑24 season ranked second in team points and leading the squad in assists with 38.

After concluding his final year with the Nittany Lions, Cerrato signed a professional tryout with the Chicago Wolves late in the 2025‑26 season. He appeared in one Calder Cup playoff game, recording no points. He is now entering the second year of his three‑year entry‑level deal, which will make him a restricted free agent after the 2027‑28 campaign.

Looking ahead to the 2026‑27 season, the Fallston, Maryland native is expected to contribute immediately. He has proven to be a consistent scorer, an adept face‑off specialist, and a reliable defensive player — traits that align well with the Hurricanes’ two‑way style.

Participating in a showcase of this caliber offers Cerrato a valuable platform to demonstrate his abilities not only to the Hurricanes organization but to the entire NHL. Considerable optimism surrounds his development as he prepares to embark on his first full professional season.

The Wolves reached the Calder Cup Final last season, falling in five games to the Toronto Marlies, and are aiming for another deep run. Among the Hurricanes’ top prospects — including Bradly Nadeau, Felix Unger Sorum, Charles Alexis Legault, and Justin Robidas — Cerrato stands out as a player the team can rely on.
