The John Deere Classic once again took place in Silvis, Illinois, where the PGA Tour schedule positioned it between major championships, resulting in a lighter field as top players prepared for the Open Championship. With the U.S. Open recently concluded and many premier golfers opting to rest before overseas competition, the stage was set for mid-tier competitors to make their move on theOWGR rankings.
Chris Gotterup capitalized on this opportunity, overcoming a late challenge from Ben Kohles to secure his third victory of the 2026 season. Despite Lucas Glover holding the lead for much of the tournament, Gotterup’s strong final round propelled him to the championship.
The victory came with dramatic flair as Kohles needed only a par on the final hole to force a playoff. However, an errant approach shot into the lake eliminated that possibility, giving Gotterup the win with a final-round surge that showcased his consistency.
This marks Gotterup’s fifth career PGA Tour victory and third of 2026, adding to his earlier wins at the Sony Open and Phoenix Waste Management Open. The triumph positions him well for next week’s Scottish Open, where he looks to defend his 2025 title.
