Attorneys for US death row inmate Christa Pike have confirmed her discharge from the hospital, where she was treated following the botched execution attempt at the end of September.
According to a statement released by her legal team on Saturday, the 50-year-old has been returned to the correctional facility where she has been incarcerated for the past three decades.
Legal representatives stated that Pike will continue to receive medical attention while held at the facility.
The incident involved Pike surviving two lethal injections of pentobarbital on September 30, leaving her in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital.
Earlier this week, Pike regained consciousness and began speaking, a development that surprised legal experts, medical staff, and her own attorneys.
“She remains grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” the lawyers stated.
Pike’s case now occupies uncharted legal territory, as she is believed to be the only individual to have survived a lethal injection execution attempt.
During a court hearing on Wednesday, Tennessee Assistant Attorney General Will Ayers told the judge he could not confirm whether the state intends to reschedule Pike’s execution.
The judge further ordered the state of Tennessee to preserve all evidence related to the failed procedure, which could serve as the foundation for future litigation against the state.
Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured, and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom they had met at a job training camp for low-income youth.
Following the procedure, Pike lost consciousness and was transported to a local hospital.
She regained consciousness and speech on Tuesday, with her lawyers reporting that her first words were “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”
