Cleveland’s introduction of the RTZ 2 wedge line marks a pivotal moment for the brand’s Tour aspirations.
In a recent episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, hosts Johnny Wunder and Jake Morrow examined the viability of Cleveland establishing a comprehensive Tour wedge roster.
Wunder indicated that Cleveland, with Roger Cleveland’s return and its strong wedge heritage, could explore a full Tour wedge program. He suggested leveraging player data to understand current wedge usage and identify new opportunities.
The RTZ 2 represents Cleveland’s first flagship wedge release since Roger Cleveland’s return to the company earlier last year.
Vokey remains the definitive force in Tour wedges, holding the top spot on the PGA Tour. Titleist maintains a dedicated team of Tour representatives, overseen by Aaron Dill, whose player feedback directly informs each new Vokey iteration.
Cleveland has maintained wedge relevance on the PGA Tour for decades, particularly since the 588’s introduction nearly 30 years ago, and its market presence has grown notably in recent years.
Cleveland/Srixon staffers have long trusted the brand’s wedges, and an increasing number of non-contracted players, including Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, and Justin Rose, have also adopted them.
Wunder noted that constructing a successful Tour wedge program requires significant manpower, but the current moment presents a genuine opening for Cleveland.
Wunder suggested that increasing Tour player exposure is a strategic move for Cleveland, given the brand’s product quality and its potential to make meaningful inroads into the wedge market.
Wunder observed that many companies leverage their proven successes aggressively in product categories, a tendency he attributes partly to ego. Cleveland’s recent RTZ 2 release demonstrates its competitive credibility in the wedge space.
The RTZ 2 release reinforces Cleveland’s standing as one of the industry’s premier wedge manufacturers.
