Paula Reid, CNN’s chief legal affairs correspondent, is expected to leave the network, sources say, as the upcoming acquisition by Paramount creates uncertainty for the news division.
Her departure follows discussions over a contract renewal and comes ahead of Paramount’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that has already stirred concerns among CNN’s newsroom staff about the future direction of the channel under its new owner.
The exit was first reported after Reid faced a contract renewal decision, prompting speculation about her future plans.
CNN declined to comment.
Reid joined CNN from CBS News in 2021 as a senior legal affairs correspondent and was promoted to chief legal affairs correspondent in 2023. Previously, she covered the White House and Justice Department for CBS, and she led coverage of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Paramount CEO David Ellison has expressed commitment to maintaining CNN’s independence, though the exact changes the merger will bring—and who will lead the network—remain unclear. Ellison recently appointed Bari Weiss as editor‑in‑chief of CBS News, where she has reshaped programming and made significant staffing changes.
The Paramount‑WBD merger is projected to close in the third quarter.
