Coachella Valley Firebirds Extend Gustav Olofsson with One-Year Contract

On Wednesday, July 29, the Coachella Valley Firebirds — the AHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken — announced the re-signing of defenseman Gustav Olofsson to a one‑year agreement.

Olofsson has been a fixture in the NHL since the 2014‑15 season, beginning with the Iowa Wild, the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild. After four seasons with Minnesota, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on October 3, 2018, and spent three years with that club. Prior to the 2021‑22 campaign, he signed with the Seattle Kraken as a free agent.

Since joining the Kraken, Olofsson has been part of the organization. When the Firebirds were still anticipating their inaugural season, he spent the 2021‑22 campaign with the Charlotte Checkers, appearing in 41 games and contributing nine points.

During the Firebirds’ inaugural 2022‑23 season, Olofsson appeared in 20 games and logged six points, and he also dressed for three games with the Kraken.

In the 2023‑24 season, Olofsson primarily suited up for the Firebirds, skating in 51 games and adding 12 points, while also earning a spot on the Kraken’s roster for a single contest.

For the 2024‑25 campaign, Olofsson remained with the Firebirds for all 51 games, tallying 17 points — a noticeable increase from the previous season. In the preceding campaign, he appeared in 48 games, scoring four goals and dishing out 28 assists for a total of 32 points, marking both a career best and a franchise high within the Kraken system.

Given his more than decade of NHL experience, Olofsson provides the Firebirds’ blue line with valuable veteran leadership; the club hopes to retain his services. Following a strong 2025‑26 performance, he aims to sustain that level of play with Coachella Valley.

Olofsson has demonstrated not only defensive reliability but also offensive upside in recent seasons. Retaining him aligns with the organization’s goals as he continues to elevate his game at this stage of his career.
