Coinbase, a Nasdaq‑listed cryptocurrency exchange, has denied any hack and affirmed that customer funds remain secure.
The breach originated at Amplitude, a third‑party analytics provider, not at Coinbase itself. The compromised data comprised a small subset of customer contact details and information belonging to other Amplitude clients, as reported by Coinbase Support on X.
Coinbase is notifying affected customers via email in accordance with legal requirements and emphasized that its systems have experienced no unauthorized access.
The incident underscores supply‑chain risk, indicating that customers may be exposed through third‑party services even when a company’s core infrastructure is secure. Coinbase has not disclosed how many customers were impacted or which specific contact‑data fields were involved, leaving those details unclear.
Although customer funds are intact, the exposed email addresses and phone numbers could be used for phishing and social‑engineering attacks, even though passwords, private keys, and assets remain secure.
CoinDesk contacted Coinbase to request comment on this matter.
