The Indianapolis Colts are placing wide receiver Alec Pierce on injured reserve, giving him dedicated time to rehabilitate his persistent heel injury, head coach Shane Steichen announced Wednesday.
According to league sources, Pierce is expected to miss several weeks after aggravating the heel. The move to injured reserve sidelines him for a minimum of four games. While surgery remains an option, the path forward depends on the progress of his rehabilitation.
The aggravated injury is to the same heel Pierce had surgically repaired in March. His recovery from that initial procedure extended longer than anticipated, resulting in a missed training camp and a return to practice only last month.
Despite being signed to a four-year, $114 million contract in March, Pierce’s availability has been limited. The Colts’ wide receiver depth was already tested by veteran backup Ashton Dulin’s ankle injury, prompting the team to sign veteran receiver Darius Slayton this week.
Steichen stated that Slayton will participate in practice on Wednesday, and a debut against the Houston Texans on Sunday has not been ruled out.
