The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will not feature cricket, marking its exclusion just two years after its return at the 2022 Birmingham Games. The decision stems from a major restructuring of the event’s program, driven by financial limitations and logistical challenges following the last-minute host change from Melbourne, Australia, to Glasgow, Scotland.
Cricket is among nine sports removed from the 2026 lineup, joining hockey, badminton, table tennis, wrestling, rugby sevens, triathlon, squash, and road cycling. The streamlined competition will now include only 10 sports, down from 19 at Birmingham 2022. Organizers stated the reductions were necessary to manage costs and leverage existing venues, avoiding expensive infrastructure upgrades.
Origins of the Exclusion
The primary factor behind cricket’s removal is budgetary constraints.
Melbourne’s withdrawal as host in July 2023 was triggered by projected costs soaring between AUD 6 billion and AUD 7 billion ($4–5 billion USD). Glasgow, appointed as the interim host, faced a 15-month gap to organize the Games with minimal financial flexibility. To meet these challenges, the program was drastically scaled, eliminating disciplines requiring high operational expenses.
Cricket’s Costly Demands
Cricket’s infrastructure requirements—including turf-based wickets, adaptable stadiums, and larger athlete support systems—rendered it unsustainable under the revised budget. Unlike indoor sports like table tennis or badminton, cricket venues demand specialized maintenance and logistics, which Glasgow deemed too costly to implement quickly.
Cricket’s Commonwealth History
Cricket returned to the Commonwealth Games in 2022 as a women’s T20 tournament, debuting after a 24-year absence. Its sole prior appearance was at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, featuring a men’s 50-over event. The 2022 edition highlighted the growing global appeal of women’s cricket, with India’s team reaching the final and earning silver medals.
Future Prospects
Organizers have not ruled out cricket’s eventual return to the Commonwealth Games. Its inclusion in future editions will hinge on host cities’ capacity to accommodate the sport’s demands. Meanwhile, cricket’s prominence at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics may bolster its case for reconsideration in subsequent Commonwealth Games.
