Coventry City’s Top-Flight Return Hampered by 25-Year Losing Streak When Conceding First

Coventry’s recent match against Manchester City showed promising signs of progress.

Despite creating 12 shots and generating an expected goals (xG) value of 1.37, Coventry failed to secure a point, leaving them frustrated after testing Manchester City’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma throughout the game.

The positive momentum carried into the first half of their encounter with Brighton, where Coventry registered 10 shots and fashioned several opportunities via Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni, entering halftime only one goal behind.

“At 3-0 down, one would expect them to accept the result and regroup, yet today’s questionable decisions have made them resemble a Championship side,” Keane added.

“Frank must now vigilantly safeguard the team’s confidence,” he concluded.

Throughout Premier League history, Southampton’s 2012/13 campaign remains the sole instance of a team avoiding relegation despite losing their first four matches.

Across the broader history of English football’s top division, 10 out of 18 teams that lost their opening four fixtures of a season ultimately faced relegation, representing a 56% rate.
