Cubs Part Ways with Former First-Rounder Tyler Beede After Acquiring Mets All-Star David Peterson

Over the second half of the season, the Chicago Cubs have been overhauling their pitching rotation in response to a series of setbacks and injuries.

Following consecutive injuries to Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera, the Cubs’ front office acted swiftly, securing Mets All‑Star starter David Peterson well ahead of the trade deadline.

Soon after the Peterson acquisition, former first‑round pick Tyler Beede opted for free agency after spending the early season with the Cubs’ Triple‑A affiliate in Iowa.

Tyler Beede Departs Cubs Organization Following Mets Trade

“After a few months with the Cubs’ Triple‑A affiliate in Iowa, right‑handed Tyler Beede elected free agency,” Connor Byrne wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “At 33, Beede was once regarded as a promising prospect.”

Beede was originally selected 21st overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, attended Vanderbilt, then re‑entered the draft in 2014 and was taken 14th by the San Francisco Giants.

He saw brief MLB action with the Giants, Pirates, and Guardians, most recently appearing in the big leagues in 2024. His time with Triple‑A Iowa did not yield the performance needed for a Cubs call‑up.

“Unless Iowa re‑signs him, this will likely mark his final outing with the organization,” Byrne continued.
“In 13 appearances and 22 2⁄3 innings, Beede posted a grim 12.71 ERA, allowing 33 hits while striking out 22 and walking 18. Despite the Cubs’ injury‑plagued pitching staff, his performance fell short of earning another big‑league opportunity, leaving him back on the free‑agent market.”

Chicago Cubs Add Veteran Mets Starter

It remains unclear whether Beede departed via an opt‑out, but it appears he may have chosen to pursue a big‑league opportunity elsewhere following the Peterson trade.

“Shortly after being swept in a doubleheader by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, the Mets dealt David Peterson to Chicago in exchange for minor‑league prospect Cole Mathis,” Robert Sanchez reported for SNY. “Manager Carlos Mendoza commented on the trade ahead of the series finale on Thursday, expressing disappointment at losing Peterson, who was entering his seventh season with New York.”

Peterson is expected to bolster Chicago’s major‑league rotation, while Beede will now seek another opportunity after his challenging stint with Iowa. For the Cubs, these moves are part of a broader strategy to deepen pitching resources as they pursue a postseason berth.
