The Danish government has announced it will compensate 13 individuals who were subjected to abuse while residing at a youth care facility under state supervision, according to a statement from Denmark’s Ministry of Social Affairs.
The survivors, whose identities remain undisclosed, filed a formal complaint in March alleging abuse suffered at Solgarden care home, which included reports of sexual violence.
Each victim is set to receive a compensation package of 300,000 Kroner, the ministry confirmed.
An investigation revealed that between 1949 and 1976, official records documented “serious and systemic failings” during the residents’ stays at the state-supervised facility.
The ministry acknowledged “extensive and systematic failures” took place during their time at the home and that “the state neglected its supervisory duty.”
One former resident, Tove Dohn Lauridsen, recounted to public radio in 2024 that at the age of eight, she and her sister were repeatedly raped by the care home’s director.
The Lutheran Mission organization, which operated Solgarden, issued an apology to all former residents in 2024.
