Former WWE Superstar Dawn Marie has opened up about the emotional challenges of her 2024 return to the company, an experience that nearly two decades after her departure, left her so overwhelmed that she asked WWE never to contact her again.
During a conversation with fellow former WWE star David Otunga on The Wednesday Hang, Marie shared that she was caught off guard when WWE reached out about a potential appearance. By that point, she had fully stepped away from the wrestling world and was working professionally as a nurse.
Dawn Marie’s Frustrating Promo Experience
WWE brought back the former ECW star in 2024 to serve as a special guest referee for a Hardcore Match between Lola Vice and Jaida Parker, held at the legendary 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.
Before accepting the invitation, Marie voiced her concerns about the long-term effects of years of wrestling, particularly the significant damage to her neck. WWE assured her that the role would not require any physical involvement.
However, Marie was then asked to film a promotional segment, a task that came naturally to her during her earlier run as a WWE Diva. She never anticipated that recording the promo would prove so difficult and time-consuming that it would consume an entire day.
Reflecting on the experience, Marie admitted, “I guess Dawn Marie was still a little angry and bitter. It was really hard to reach that person.”
She explained that reviving her wrestling persona was a struggle, as she had long left that chapter of her life behind in the “rearview mirror.”
The frustration from the experience was enough to prompt Marie to reach out directly to “Paul” and ask that WWE refrain from calling her in the future.
“Please, if my name ever comes up again, just tell them f***ing no,” Marie recalled saying. “I don’t ever want to torture myself like this again. Please, no.”
Despite her initial irritation, Marie’s perspective shifted once she finally stepped into the 2300 Arena for the event.
She ultimately expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing the experience as a meaningful moment of closure for her career. Performing in the ECW Arena felt like “full circle,” given her significant history with the brand.
In the end, Marie was able to bring her wrestling chapter to a close on her own terms.
Today, Marie continues her work as a nurse, specializing in locked geriatric dementia units. Beyond her medical career, she owns a crystal shop and recently launched an OnlyFans account.
