Savio Impresses on Tottenham Debut as De Zerbi Sets Ambitious Goal Target

Jamie Redknapp has praised Savio for his electrifying Tottenham debut, while manager Roberto De Zerbi has challenged the Brazilian to reach even higher levels after his impressive start at the club.

Savio completed an £85m move from Manchester City on Tuesday and wasted no time winning over the Spurs faithful, scoring and providing an assist during a 20-minute appearance in Tottenham’s 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over Charlton.

The 22-year-old showcased his flair and creativity with every touch, and despite managing just one Premier League goal last season, demonstrated the cutting edge that Tottenham have been lacking, with the club scoring only 48 league goals themselves.

His standout performance drew commendation from former Tottenham midfielder Redknapp, who believes the young winger provides exactly the spark supporters have been craving.

“He lit the place up,” Redknapp said after the match.

“This is what Tottenham need. Players who can excite the crowd. Who can drive inside and unleash a powerful left-footed strike. He was outstanding.”

Despite the immediate impact, Spurs manager De Zerbi has set his sights higher for his new signing.

Before Savio’s debut, De Zerbi outlined the qualities needed to become one of the world’s elite wingers, reinforcing that message after the game.

“It was a perfect day for him,” De Zerbi commented.

“His biggest challenge and area for improvement is increasing his goal tally. In terms of ability, he is already among the best wingers, but the top performers at this position score plenty of goals.

“I’ve spoken with him and set a target of 10 to 12 goals because we need that kind of contribution from our wide players.

“Last season we struggled significantly because our goal output was insufficient to compete for anything beyond a 17th-place finish.”

“A lot can unfold in just one minute of football. Even more in 20. As we’ve just witnessed, that’s sufficient time to cement yourself as a fan favourite.

“Savio’s arrival at Tottenham came with questions surrounding the substantial fee. Why were Spurs prepared to spend so much on a player who contributed just three goal contributions in the Premier League last season?

“Yet the moment he appeared in a white shirt, he was a dynamic presence. Tottenham supporters cherish entertainment, and they were on their feet every time he received the ball.

“The fact that his excitement was matched by tangible end product makes it even more significant, particularly for a Spurs side that has often appeared toothless going forward.

“Opposition quality will increase, and Savio must rise to meet that challenge. However, as debut performances go, for someone who arrived less than 24 hours earlier, you could hardly ask for more.”
