Many electronics users have felt the wave of panic that comes with trying to wipe away a mark on their screen, only to realize it’s actually a screen issue. Sometimes the cause is as simple as a faulty cable, which usually isn’t serious. Other times, though, the problem is a pixel defect—something that can be more concerning because some types are harder to fix.
Even premium monitors can develop pixel defects. The two primary categories are stuck pixels and dead pixels—both are unwanted dots or clusters that degrade the viewing experience. While they look similar, they differ in appearance and repairability.
Spotting the difference
The most obvious distinction is how each pixel behaves under illumination. A stuck pixel remains lit, showing a constant color such as blue, red, green, or a bright white dot, whereas a dead pixel is completely dark because it no longer functions. This visual cue makes it relatively straightforward to tell which defect you are facing. Additionally, fixability differs markedly: stuck pixels often respond to software fixes or gentle troubleshooting techniques and can be restored to normal operation, while dead pixels are typically irreversible. If a dead pixel appears, the user must either replace the display or accept its presence. Though disappointing, a dead pixel is generally less intrusive than more severe problems like screen burn‑in.

How to test for dead and stuck pixels
Because dead and stuck pixels are tiny, pinpointing them can be challenging and it’s not always clear whether they are the source of a visual defect. Start by eliminating other potential causes: clean the screen thoroughly, test the display across various applications, and, if possible, swap out cables and input devices. After ruling these out, use a dedicated pixel‑testing tool. Websites and applications such as Dead Pixel Buddy can detect defects, while utilities like JScreenFix or Dead Pixels Test and Fix may also attempt to repair them. Stuck pixels that stem from intermittent power or heat issues can be especially difficult to identify, so it’s wise to run a test immediately when the problem reappears.
