[Incident at Canadian Military Base Triggers Serious Emergency]
A large fire near a Canadian military base in Alberta has killed and injured persons, the defence minister said, without confirming the exact number of casualties.
The Canadian Armed Forces coordinated with local authorities to contain the blaze and investigated its cause, McGuinty stated, labeling the situation “very, very active and delicate”.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced via X that a “serious incident creating a major fire” had occurred, expressing his thoughts for the brave women and men involved.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where the fire started, is one of the nation’s most active military training centers.
The CBC describes the facility as “the principal base for live‑fire training exercises”. About 690 service members and 300 civilian workers regularly operate at the base.
Saturday’s blaze spread rapidly thanks to strong winds and tore through the base perimeter fence, according to the Municipal District of Wainwright.
Minister David McGuinty told reporters he has never experienced an incident as severe in recent memory.
Provincial leader Danielle Smith characterized the tragedy as significant and tragic, noting it impacts many of the province’s brave military personnel. She added that provincial officials are liaising closely with the federal government to manage and investigate the incident.
The precise time the fire ignited is unconfirmed, although local authorities first posted the update at approximately 17:30 (19:30 GMT).
Residents have been advised to evacuate the area and to grant right-of-way to emergency vehicles.
Neighboring provinces have pledged assistance.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe confirmed that resources have been dispatched to Alberta and remains prepared to extend additional support if needed. British Columbia Premier David Eby announced that his government has reached out to Alberta to offer every form of aid.
