Deadly West Bank Clash Leaves Four Palestinians, Two Israelis Dead Amid Conflicting Accounts

At least four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed on Saturday in a shooting incident in the northern West Bank village of Tal, marking the deadliest single confrontation in the territory in months. The sequence of events remains sharply disputed, with Palestinian witnesses and Israeli authorities offering starkly different narratives.

Palestinian residents told the BBC that the violence erupted early in the morning when locals confronted roughly 30 settlers who were attacking homes in the village. Ahmed Zeidan, an eyewitness, described hand-to-hand clashes breaking out in the presence of Israeli soldiers. Essam Saifi, a local Fatah official, told Reuters that settlers opened fire before Israeli forces arrived and joined the shooting. He identified two brothers and two of their cousins among the dead, adding that several other Palestinians were wounded.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) presented a different account, stating that soldiers responded to reports of an attack on Israeli civilians hiking in the area—part of which falls under Palestinian Authority administrative control but Israeli security control. The military noted the hike was not coordinated with them. According to the IDF, a security guard from a nearby settler outpost had his weapon snatched by a Palestinian who used it to kill him. Soldiers then “eliminated the terrorist who executed the terror attack,” the military said.

The IDF later confirmed a 27-year-old soldier was also killed during operational activity in the village, though the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The Israeli ambulance service reported two additional Israelis wounded. The military has not explained who killed the other Palestinians.

Two video clips circulating on local media—though not independently verified—appear to show chaotic confrontations. One shows Palestinians clashing with Israeli soldiers and armed Israelis in civilian clothes as gunshots ring out, while a second angle appears to show one of the Palestinian men grabbing a weapon and firing before troops respond.

The incident comes amid a sharp surge in settler attacks against Palestinians and their property in the West Bank since the Gaza war began on October 7, 2023. The IDF announced it is preparing for a major operation in the area and has cancelled soldiers’ leave.
