Dutch authorities detain 34 suspects following fatal gang-related shooting in eastern Netherlands village

Foreign nationals among those apprehended, prosecutors confirm.

Law enforcement officials in the Netherlands have taken 34 individuals into custody following a violent shooting incident linked to drug-related activities in a small eastern town, which resulted in the death of a security guard and injuries to two police officers.

Jolanda Aalbers, the regional police chief, addressed the media on Tuesday, stating that a substantial group of masked individuals opened fire at approximately 4 a.m. local time (02:00 GMT) as officers approached a residence in Overasselt, a village situated near the German border. Police had been responding to reports of suspicious activity in the area.

During the exchange of gunfire, a 51-year-old security guard lost his life, while two officers who arrived at the scene sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Aalbers.

“When the initial police unit reached the location, gunshots were fired without hesitation,” the police chief remarked. “This was an extraordinarily traumatic event. The officers had to immediately work to extract their injured colleagues and bring them to safety. I hold immense admiration for their courage under such circumstances.”

Aalbers further noted that authorities recovered multiple firearms, data storage devices, and vehicles from the scene.

The suspects arrested include individuals from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Algeria, as reported by regional prosecutors.

Authorities indicated that the shooting appears to be connected to a prolonged dispute, noting that the same residence had been targeted in a previous incident last year, when it was struck by gunfire approximately a dozen times in a single occurrence. Two individuals were convicted in connection with that earlier attack.

Local news outlets have drawn connections between this incident and the criminal network associated with Dutch drug kingpin Jos Leijdekkers, widely known as “Bolle Jos” or “Fat Jos.” Recognized as one of the Netherlands’ most sought-after fugitives, Leijdekkers has a prior conviction for his involvement in international cocaine trafficking operations.

David van Weel, the Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, commended the police response, stating that officers “acted swiftly in response to the life-threatening situation in Overasselt, which involved an unprecedented number of people.”

In a statement shared on X, the minister confirmed that 34 individuals had been taken into custody and emphasized that “the investigation is still ongoing,” while strongly denouncing the “horrific act of violence.”
