Chief Football Operations Officer Eliot Wolf Addresses Ongoing Contract Stalemate with Cornerback Christian González
When the Falcons added running back Bijan Robinson to a new contract, the Lions and fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs cited the Robinson deal as a blueprint for moving swiftly toward their own agreements. When the Seahawks extended cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a new deal, many expected a parallel outcome for both the Patriots and cornerback Christian González.
Eight days later, the agreement has not materialized—despite Both players sharing the same agency.
During Saturday’s preseason matchup between the Patriots and the Eagles, New England’s VP of Football Operations Eliot Wolf spoke into the broadcast about the lingering impasse.
“Each side is trying to do what’s right for them,” Wolf told the broadcast via ESPN correspondent Mike Reiss. “Christian is a tremendous player, and our organization has repeatedly stated we want him on the roster; this goal remains unchanged. We will work closely with his agent to achieve a resolution.”
The financial picture makes this difficult. Taking Witherspoon’s contract—a move that lifted the Seahawks’ overall payroll to $33 million—does not automatically allow the Patriots to offer González a comparable package of $34 million, underscoring how complex cross‑team negotiations can be.
The franchise views González under contract through 2027, thanks to his fully exercised fifth‑year option. Conversely, the player seeks to surpass the $20.38 million he earned from the balance of his rookie deal, aiming for a salary that sets a new benchmark for the cornerback market.
