Young Sheldon star Emily Osment has revealed she requested an intimacy coordinator during her time on the CBS series due to the age difference between herself and co-star Montana Jordan. Osment, who portrayed Mandy McAllister, was 30 when she joined the show in 2022, while Jordan, who played George Cooper, was 18.

According to Jessica Radloff’s new book, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy—an oral history of the series—Osment explained that although she and Jordan never filmed sex scenes together, she still felt “uncomfortable” because of their age gap.

“That made me uncomfortable. He was a baby! A baby with a mullet,” Osment said. “I spoke to Tim Marx, and while they weren’t able to bring one in at that late stage, an intimacy coordinator was present for the next several episodes as their relationship developed. Having one there made everything easier. I believe it’s something that’s truly important.”

“I don’t know if Montana even realized he could ask for that. Let’s give him the option, too. Make him comfortable. He’s such a sweet kid, I think he would have just swallowed his discomfort,” she continued. “But I love those guys, and I’m really glad we reached a point where they were able to provide that for us.”

Elsewhere in the book, director Alex Reid acknowledged that the production initially “dropped the ball” by overlooking the need for an intimacy coordinator, a decision influenced by the show’s lack of sex scenes.

“I have a photo between takes of them sitting in that car, and they’re looking off in opposite directions,” Reid added. “I showed it to Emily, and she said, ‘Yeah, that was so uncomfortable for both of us because we didn’t know each other.’ It wasn’t even about lacking an intimacy coordinator. It’s just that you’re having to make out with someone you’ve barely met. Obviously, they worked it out and have great chemistry now, but that was kind of embarrassing.”

Osment and Jordan now star in the Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, currently in its third season and airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
