England Omit Buttler from Tri-Series Amid Central Contract Discussions

During a standout international summer, Cox made a strong impression by scoring fifties in all three Tests after being promoted to bat at number three against Pakistan. He also demonstrated his capabilities by scoring 76 against Sri Lanka, deputizing for Buttler in the third ODI at The Oval on Sunday.

McCullum remarked, “I thought it was quite a Jos Buttler innings.”

“He has excelled domestically for several years and has been unfortunate with injuries.”

“Given the summer he has produced and his current standing, he absolutely deserves this opportunity.”

England will also decide whether to include bowler Brydon Carse in their tour of Pakistan. He has not been selected since his arrest and subsequent release following a night out in Derby in August.

With the police investigation concluding without action, Carse is now under review by the Cricket Regulator. Although he remains eligible for selection, white-ball captain Harry Brook stated last week that Carse requires time away from the international stage.

McCullum, who coached England across all three formats at the start of the summer before being dismissed from the Test role in July, dismissed any notion of regret as the English season concluded.

“I thoroughly enjoyed coaching across all three formats,” he stated. “Circumstances evolve, and times change. I am partial, but I genuinely believe [new Test coach] Stephen Fleming will do an outstanding job with the red-ball team.”

“The additional time will likely allow us to focus on specific areas identified for improvement and to shape the team differently to achieve our objectives.”
