England’s preparation for the second Test against New Zealand, set to commence at The Oval on Wednesday, has encountered setbacks as Ollie Robinson undergoes a precautionary knee scan following soreness from training. The team has summoned uncapped Sussex teammate Henry Crocombe to provide coverage in his absence.

With Stokes and Atkinson—who claimed seven wickets in the first Test—excluded from selection, England have recalled Jofra Archer for the 15-player squad after his involvement in the IPL. Additional seam-bowling options include Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker.

England confirmed in a statement: “Uncapped seamer Henry Crocombe has joined the England Men’s Test squad as cover for Ollie Robinson. Robinson suffered knee soreness after a training session yesterday and is expected to undergo a scan today.”

Crocombe gained attention during Sussex’s match against Glamorgan at Hove, taking 2 for 41 in the opening innings before being substituted on the second day. This season, he has taken 21 Division One wickets at an average of 28.61, including a notable 4 for 65 in the Lions’ unofficial Test against South Africa A last month.

Robinson, Archer, and Atkinson were also present at Hove during net sessions under the supervision of Troy Cooley, England’s leading pace-bowling specialist.

Robinson’s inclusion in the first Test followed a return to form after periods of injury between 2021 and 2024, during which he demonstrated commitment to fitness and preparation.England leads the series 1-0, with upcoming Tests at The Oval and Trent Bridge. New Zealand faces lineup adjustments for the second Test due to Kane Williamson’s surprise retirement from international cricket.
