ESPN analyst projects Raiders’ Brock Bowers to break NFL history with potential 2026 Offensive Player of the Year

Brock Bowers has already established himself as one of the NFL’s premier tight ends.

ESPN analyst Seth Walder believes the Raiders star is poised to elevate his performance significantly in 2026, potentially becoming the league’s most valuable offensive player.

Walder predicted Bowers will capture the Offensive Player of the Year award, a notably bold forecast given that no tight end has ever won the AP honor. The prediction would also mark a substantial comeback following Bowers’ injury-shortened 2025 campaign, which concluded with 64 receptions, 680 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns across 12 games.

The reasoning begins with the Raiders’ new head coach, Klint Kubiak.

“Last year, Klint Kubiak had one clear-cut playmaker who was better than all the rest,” Walder wrote. “What happened? A 35% target rate for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Now, it’s Bowers who is the clear-cut best receiver. I think the Raiders will run their offense through him, and he’ll put up monster numbers.”

Smith-Njigba converted that workload into 119 receptions, 1,793 yards, and 10 touchdowns for Seattle, ultimately earning the 2025 Offensive Player of the Year award and helping the Seahawks secure the Super Bowl championship. Smith-Njigba’s award-winning season provides a natural template for what Kubiak could attempt with Bowers.

Las Vegas has additional motivation to center its passing attack around Bowers.

The Raiders enter the season without a wide receiver who has ever posted a 1,000-yard season. Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor could develop into contributors, but neither enters 2026 as the type of proven target who should limit Bowers’ opportunities to dominate.

Bowers has already demonstrated his capabilities when given substantial volume.

During his healthy 2024 rookie campaign, he recorded an NFL rookie-record 112 receptions for 1,194 yards and five touchdowns, despite playing alongside quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell.

His impact becomes even more compelling when measured against that season’s Offensive Player of the Year winner, Saquon Barkley.

On plays where each player was directly involved as either a runner or receiver, Bowers generated approximately 0.57 EPA per play with a 56.3% success rate in 2024. Barkley, who rushed for 2,005 yards en route to the award, posted approximately 0.13 EPA per play with a 44.1% success rate.

That comparison is not entirely equivalent in measuring their complete value, as Barkley handled significantly more opportunities, and these figures do not capture all the contributions either player made outside of direct involvement. However, they demonstrate that Bowers was already generating tremendous value whenever Las Vegas directed the offense through him.

The more challenging comparison involves Smith-Njigba.

The 2025 award winner produced approximately 0.81 EPA per play with a 63.5% success rate on his direct opportunities, comfortably surpassing Bowers’ rookie metrics. Smith-Njigba also accumulated the more impressive counting statistics that typically influence awards voting.

This suggests Bowers may need to do more than simply return to his rookie performance level. He may need to exceed it.

Kubiak offers a promising pathway. The new Raiders coach recently directed an offense constructed around an elite pass catcher, and Las Vegas has enhanced its quarterback group with Kirk Cousins and No. 1 overall draft selection Fernando Mendoza.

The Raiders selected Mendoza first overall after also signing Cousins to serve as the veteran bridge quarterback.

Bowers likely needs to produce historic tight end numbers to actually claim the award.

Walder is wagering that Kubiak will provide him the opportunity to generate those numbers.
