Ex-County Cricketer Turns to Darts After Leicestershire Exit

Former county cricketer who dismissed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma finds new expertise on the darts oche.

Roman Walker, who spent six years playing for Glamorgan and Leicestershire, concluded his professional contract in 2025 with the Foxes and has since identified transferable skills that make him a competent darts competitor.

The former pace bowler, still active in minor counties cricket for Shropshire, took 53 wickets across all formats during his career, including 24 in the T20 Blast at an average of 24.

He is perhaps best remembered for a 5‑24 performance for Leicestershire against India in a tour match, where he dismissed former captains Kohli and Sharma as well as all‑rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

After departing Leicestershire, Walker acknowledged a period of adjustment to life outside professional cricket, yet noted a sense of liberation that came with his new path.

“Through the experiences you have in professional cricket, when you are not always a regular first‑team member, it can be a very challenging environment,” Walker told BBC Radio Shropshire.

“I fell off the wrong side of it and chose not to renew my contract, which I can accept because it’s part of sport. It offered a release from that pressure.”

“There is a part of you that thinks ‘I don’t need that stress!’ Stepping into ordinary life revealed a freedom I had never experienced, having gone straight from school into professional cricket.”

“On the flip side, if someone comes knocking I wouldn’t be able to say no—it’s a fine line.”
