FNB is expanding its investment platform into cryptocurrencies, allowing customers to trade selected digital assets from R10 through a partnership with VALR.
FNB Adds Cryptocurrency Investments
First National Bank (FNB) has introduced cryptocurrency investments to customers through its existing share trading platform, expanding the range of assets available to South African investors.
The bank has partnered with cryptocurrency exchange VALR to provide access to a curated selection of digital currencies. Customers will be able to trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Solana and USDT, a dollar-pegged stablecoin.
FNB said the service will allow clients to access crypto assets from as little as R10, with trading available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Crypto Trading Integrated Into FNB Ecosystem
FNB CEO Sizwe Nxedlana said the offering responds to growing customer demand for alternative investment opportunities and provides exposure to an emerging asset class.
The cryptocurrency service will be integrated into FNB’s existing ecosystem, allowing customers to use funds held in their FNB accounts when trading digital assets.
The bank said the arrangement is designed to provide a more controlled approach to security, compliance and exchange-control requirements.
Importantly, crypto assets will be ringfenced within the FNB ecosystem and cannot be transferred into or out of the platform.
Growing Interest in Digital Assets
FNB Wealth and Asset Management CEO Bheki Mkhize said the bank has observed significant interest in cryptocurrencies among its customers.
FNB also pointed to increasing regulatory clarity and greater institutional involvement as factors supporting the development of the crypto market. The bank highlighted growing participation from major investment managers and evolving regulatory and tax frameworks.
FNB Targets Broader Investment Access
The new offering gives FNB customers another way to diversify their investments without requiring a separate cryptocurrency trading account.
The launch also reflects the growing integration of digital assets into mainstream financial services. However, cryptocurrencies remain volatile and can carry significant investment risk.
For FNB, the move allows the bank to respond to rising customer demand while keeping crypto trading within a controlled banking environment.
