Ukrainian officials reported at least four fatalities and ten injuries in ongoing Russian attacks on Friday, a day after Moscow launched its deadliest assault on Kyiv this year.
In the Sumy region near the border, Russian drone fire struck a residential apartment building, killing two women, an elderly man, and a toddler, while injuring three others, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the regional military administration.
A separate missile strike on the central city of Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region left seven people wounded, said Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s defence council. Nine apartment blocks, a school, a business, multiple shops, garages, and roughly ten vehicles sustained damage, with two residential buildings losing gas connectivity.
Kyiv observed a day of mourning on Friday following an overnight barrage that killed at least 30 people—the deadliest attack on the capital so far this year.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the strikes, calling attacks on civilians and infrastructure “a clear violation of international humanitarian law.” The Kremlin reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying pressure on Kyiv.
Ukraine’s air force intercepted 476 of 496 drones and 48 of 74 missiles, including difficult-to-shoot-down ballistic missiles, according to officials.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced plans to propose new sanctions against Moscow, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed retaliation, stating Putin had “been preparing this massive strike against Ukraine for some time now.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia’s border regions killed at least two people overnight. In Belgorod, a woman died in a car after shrapnel injuries, and utilities were disrupted. Fires damaged an industrial site in Bryansk, and another fire erupted in Smolensk following drone strikes, with no reported injuries.
