Few fixtures illustrate the chasm in global football history quite like the meeting between Argentina and Cape Verde. The reigning world champions, one of the sport’s most decorated nations, prepare to face opponents who only made their Africa Cup of Nations debut a little over a decade ago.
When Argentina contested the inaugural World Cup final in 1930, finishing as runners-up to Uruguay, Cape Verde was still a Portuguese colony. La Albiceleste have missed just one World Cup since—Mexico 1970, aside from wartime withdrawals—and have lifted the trophy three times: on home soil in 1978, in Mexico in 1986, and most recently in Qatar in 2022 after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over France.
Their continental dominance is equally pronounced, with a record 16 Copa América titles, including the last two editions. Argentina has remained a fixture in the top three of the FIFA world rankings since March 2022, holding the number one position for two years before France displaced them in 2024.
By contrast, the Cape Verdean Football Federation was only established in 1982 and gained FIFA affiliation in 1986—the same year Argentina claimed their second world title. The Blue Sharks entered World Cup qualifying for the first time in 2002 but only emerged as genuine contenders recently. They narrowly missed the 2022 tournament, drawing 1-1 in Lagos when a win over Nigeria would have secured passage to Qatar.
For the 2026 cycle, Cape Verde topped a qualifying group containing eight-time World Cup participants Cameroon, losing just once in ten matches. Their rise has been rapid: a first AFCON appearance came in 2013, yielding a quarter-final run, a feat repeated at the 2023 edition. Curiously, they failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON despite securing their World Cup qualifying group.
Cape Verde broke into the FIFA top 100 in 2006, peaking at 27th in 2014. They have largely settled in the 60–80 range over the last nine years and enter Friday’s encounter ranked 64th—a statistical gulf that underscores the magnitude of the challenge awaiting them.
