Game of Thrones RTS Adaptation Postponed to 2027

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has been pushed back to 2027 to ensure the title meets high quality standards.

Initially announced last year, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an epic real-time strategy game that allows players to reshape the narrative of the hit television series. According to the Steam description, players can “conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer. Command the Great Houses, rally iconic heroes, and rewrite the fate of the realm. Do you have the strength to seize the Iron Throne.” Players will have the option to lead House Stark, Lannister, or Targaryen, or even command an “army of the dead” as the Night King.

A cinematic reveal trailer showcases beloved characters from the show, including Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister. Rather than strictly adhering to the show’s established storyline, the developers have emphasized that War for Westeros grants players full agency over the story’s conclusion. The trailer illustrates this freedom by depicting alternative outcomes, such as the Night King killing Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen falling to an enemy soldier.

While the game was originally expected to launch later this year, developer PlaySide had remained silent regarding updates following the initial reveal. However, the studio confirmed the delay over the weekend.

In a recent blog post, the developers stated, “Since the announcement of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, development has been progressing well.” While detailing how maps, combat, and heroes will function, PlaySide announced that War for Westeros is now slated for an “early” 2027 release.

“We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans,” the studio added. “This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for. We know the wait has been long, and we do not take your support for granted.”
