The coaching tenures of Jonathan Gannon and Kyler Murray in Arizona concluded simultaneously after the 2025 season, yet the two will reunite for the opening matchup of their new roles.
Now serving as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, Gannon faces the challenge of limiting Murray in his first start as the Vikings’ quarterback. During a press conference earlier this week, Gannon explained that his previous experience with Murray has given him clear insight into the defensive keys for Sunday.
“He’s a really good player,” Gannon said, per WLUK. “He operates in a strong offense surrounded by elite talent. I have nothing but respect for K-1. He’s competitive, intelligent, and capable with both his arm and his legs, which makes him a significant challenge. I know firsthand what he can do on the ground, and he can severely disrupt a game if you aren’t properly organized. We need to keep him contained and be prepared to disrupt his runs at all times, because he has a knack for escaping the pocket and extending plays. Once he’s out of the pocket, I believe he’s at his most dangerous.”
Murray was sidelined late in the 2025 season after sustaining a foot injury, a decision influenced by contractual concerns as the Cardinals sought to avoid guaranteeing his 2027 salary. The move ultimately cost Gannon his position, and containing his former quarterback would serve as an ideal start to his tenure with Green Bay.
