India head coach Gautam Gambhir has shared a heartfelt tribute to former teammate Ajit Agarkar following his decision to step down as the BCCI chief selector. Agarkar, who was appointed to the prestigious role in July 2023, oversaw a highly successful era for Indian cricket, marked by victories in two T20 World Cups, the ICC Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup.
Gambhir, who collaborated closely with Agarkar during his tenure, took to social media to express his gratitude for his former teammate’s contributions. The India head coach highlighted Agarkar’s unwavering conviction and team-first philosophy, wishing him the best for his future endeavors.
Gautam Gambhir thanks Ajit Agarkar for his contribution
Gambhir thanked Agarkar for his significant contributions to Indian cricket, pointing to the three major ICC trophies secured during their joint tenure. He emphasized that Agarkar’s positive impact on the team will be recognized and appreciated in the long run.
“Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always.. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours!!”
Agarkar’s tenure officially concluded on October 4, following an extension granted in June, which he ultimately chose not to pursue. His departure marks the end of a highly successful period characterized by consistent international triumphs for the Indian team.

BCCI invites applications for chief selector role
With Agarkar’s departure, the BCCI has officially opened the application process to find his successor. The board announced the vacancy on Tuesday, setting a submission deadline of October 14 for interested candidates.
Currently, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha serves as the interim chairman of selectors, alongside panel members Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh. Having played 24 Tests for India, Ojha is a strong contender for the permanent role based on seniority.
The BCCI’s eligibility criteria for the chief selector position remain unchanged. Applicants must meet the requirement of having played at least seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs alongside 20 first-class matches, and must have been retired from professional cricket for a minimum of five years. Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is also among the names floated as a potential candidate; his experience of 25 Tests could position him with greater seniority than Ojha should he apply for the post.
