George Russell has returned from the Formula 1 summer break feeling “more relaxed” as he looks to mount a late charge in the 2026 championship battle alongside Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli currently leads the championship standings, holding a 56-point cushion over third-placed Russell. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton sits in second, just 53 points behind the leader, with 12 of the 23 rounds remaining.
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort presents a crucial opportunity for Russell to close the gap. He has already made positive strides, claiming victory in the sprint race from pole position, while Antonelli finished fourth.
That momentum carried into Saturday’s qualifying, where Russell secured second on the grid behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. In contrast, Antonelli will start from third after a costly error at Turn 1 left him frustrated.
“I’m just going to take it race by race,” Russell stated at Zandvoort. “I’m not going to come away from this weekend and say all our issues are resolved.”
“I do think I made some significant changes heading into the Barcelona weekend, and as I said earlier this morning, I had some strong races in Barcelona and Austria. However, Silverstone and Spa were hampered by power unit issues, and Budapest was simply not a competitive weekend for me.”

“So, I think it just hasn’t been a clean run this season. It has not been a clean season whatsoever with all of the issues that we’ve had. But I just feel, I think after the break, I feel way more relaxed. I don’t feel like I’ve got anything to lose.”
“The pressure is off. I’m just going to go out, enjoy it, and I don’t even really feel in a fight. It’s not mine to lose, it’s mine to gain. That’s the mentality I’ve got, and I feel it’s going to help me. I’m just enjoying driving.”
This season has obviously not gone as hoped for Russell, who entered the major 2026 regulation switch as the heavy title favorite, with Mercedes expected to dominate the grid.
However, his sophomore teammate has held the upper hand, showcasing blistering one-lap pace with six pole positions. Meanwhile, both drivers have faced bouts of misfortune during various grand prix weekends.
Russell has also noted that the new 2026 cars suit Antonelli’s aggressive driving style. As a result, the 28-year-old has spent much of the season adapting his typically smoother approach to match the car’s demands.
The August summer break therefore arrived at an ideal time for the British driver, allowing him to focus on continuous development. He remains convinced that the title fight is “far from over.”

“Obviously, Kimi has been doing an amazing job this season, and clearly the two of us have quite different driving styles,” Russell added.
“That was apparent last year, and it is really working well for him with this car and these tires. I’m just trying to implement something similar into my driving style.”
“I describe it as if you change your golf swing, you’ll probably take half a step back before making those improvements.”
“The break just allowed me to put those learnings into the back of my mind. Coming here this weekend, I’m not fixating on what I want to try and achieve with the car and the tires, but knowing in the back of my head what I need to achieve and just driving more freely.”
“I’m really, really proud of that because it’s just sort of building that toolbox of experience for me that’s going to allow me to be even better in the years to come.”
“Who knows, maybe next year the technique is totally different again. That’s the beauty and challenge of Formula 1. Every year it’s different.”
