The path to success was anything but smooth. Europe possesses a highly developed space industry with a distinguished heritage, yet it has rarely been characterized by rapid innovation.
“In the early days, particularly back in 2018 when there was essentially no ‘New Space’ sector on this side of the Atlantic, many people said it would never work,” Metzler remarked during a press briefing on Sunday. “Skeptics will continue to insist that various elements of this endeavor will fail, but we will simply demonstrate that they are mistaken. Relinquishing our ambitions is fundamentally incompatible with who we are.”
Isar required eight years to reach orbit, a timeline comparable to other accomplished commercial rocket ventures in the Western world. Over this period, the company secured approximately $1 billion across multiple private funding rounds and currently employs close to 500 people. This positions Isar as by far the most heavily funded private launch enterprise in Europe.
“As a general principle, people tend to overestimate what can be accomplished in the short term while significantly underestimating long-term potential,” Metzler observed. “It is important to remember the human dimension driving all of this. We have engineers, technicians, operators, and a dedicated support network who dared to envision something greater. Against considerable challenges, that team delivered.”

Isar’s accomplishment represents encouraging developments for the European Space Agency and the broader European space sector as they pursue more economical launch solutions for deploying satellites. The established European launch providers, Arianespace and Avio, have historically depended on billions of euros in government investment to develop and operate their launch vehicles. These companies currently manage the Ariane 6 and Vega-C rockets, which have demonstrated dependability but remain only marginally competitive in the global marketplace, even when supplemented by public funding.
