Demonstrations against soaring living costs descended into chaos across multiple German cities on Saturday night, as peaceful rallies gave way to rioting, looting, and violent clashes with police.
The protests were organized by the campaign group “Gen Z regelt” (“Gen Z Takes Charge”). Thousands participated in largely peaceful demonstrations nationwide before outbreaks of violence erupted in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg.
Frankfurt, the nation’s financial center, saw the most severe unrest. Rioters ransacked shops in the city center, resulting in at least 54 arrests and injuries to more than 100 police officers, according to authorities.
The German unrest mirrors a broader wave of dissatisfaction sweeping across Europe, driven by persistent inflation, strained public services, and a deepening shortage of affordable housing.
