For many athletes, the mentality that fuels peak performance on the field can lead them to reckless choices off it.
A clear example is Giants running back Cam Skattebo.
In November, shortly after sustaining a season‑ending ankle injury, he was pushing and shoving at a WWE event. With his ankle now healed, Skattebo decided to showcase his recovery at Fanatics Fest.
When he lifted the leg of his pants to expose the ankle that had been dislocated along with a tibia fracture, Skattebo attempted a backflip. Unfortunately, he missed the landing.
He stumbled backward, fell to the floor, then sprang up as if the mishap were intentional.
As many observers have noted, Giants head coach John Harbaugh may not appreciate seeing the video. Although some have pointed out that Harbaugh once rebuked quarterback Joe Flacco for riding a skateboard during a playoff run that culminated in a Ravens Super Bowl, the criticism actually came from former general manager Ozzie Newsome.
Nevertheless, the concern is valid. Even if Skattebo will eventually confront greater health risks when he returns to full‑contact play, there is no excuse for voluntarily increasing those risks.
