Bassam Tariq, Liz Garbus, and Elizabeth Wolff will be recognized with alumni of distinction awards at this year’s Gotham Week Honors, celebrating their enduring connections to The Gotham and their ongoing contributions to independent filmmaking.
The awards highlight the honorees’ significant impact on the independent film community through their longstanding relationships with The Gotham organization.
Tariq first engaged with The Gotham’s programs in 2012, presenting “These Birds Walk” at both the IFP Documentary Lab and Independent Film Week. His recent feature “In Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” is scheduled for theatrical release on September 25 following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Garbus and Wolff, both graduates of the Gotham Week Project Market’s documentary section, have extensive histories with the program. Garbus showcased “The Farm: Angola USA” in 1997 and “Girlhood” in 2002, while Wolff presented “The Feminist Tapes” (which Garbus executive produced) in 2024. Their collaborative directorial effort, the Billy Jean King documentary “Give Me the Ball!”, is set for theatrical and ESPN release on November 22.
Gotham Week will additionally screen “In Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” alongside “Give Me the Ball!”, “Tip Toe and Seeds”, “Seeds”, and “The Fisherman”.
Rachael J. Morrison’s “Joybubbles” will receive the Best Film Coming to a Cinema Near You award. This documentary, featured in the 2022 Gotham Week Project Market, follows a young blind boy who discovers he can control the global telephone system through whistling.

Together, the Honors and Screenings celebrate the continued achievements of our alumni while creating opportunities for audiences to discover bold new work and engage with the artists behind it.”
Gotham Week will also recognize emerging filmmakers and projects from the Gotham Week Project Market across several categories: documentaries, US features in development, US shorts to features, and global producers hub.
