Lean hog futures slipped back 50 to 120 cents per pound around midday, though the October contract gained 25 cents. The USDA’s national base hog price fell to $76.09 in the Tuesday afternoon report, a drop of $2.43 from the previous day. Meanwhile, the CME Lean Hog Index declined another 57 cents on October 2, settling at $79.63.
August pork exports, measured on a carcass basis, totaled 515.88 million pounds—a 4.6% decrease year‑over‑year and 2.4% lower than July’s figures.
The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value rose $1.17 to $87.18 in the Tuesday morning report, with only picnic and ham primal values falling. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Monday was estimated at 493,000 head, up 9,000 from the prior Monday and 1,816 from the same Monday a year earlier.
