Hong Kong Telecom (HKT) has confirmed that a US regulatory order compelling it to justify its operations in the United States has been terminated, following reports that the company will exit the American market under pressure from a US agency over national security concerns.
A spokesperson for HKT told the South China Morning Post on Saturday that the Order to Show Cause issued by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in October – which required the carrier to justify why its rights to provide international and domestic services to the US should not be revoked – “has been ceased.”
Reuters reported earlier that HKT will halt its US operations under pressure from the FCC.
