Yemeni officials report that a missile attack attributed to the Houthi movement targeted the Presidential Palace in Aden on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two guards and leaving six others injured. The palace serves as the headquarters for Yemen’s internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government.
Nayef al-Bakri, the Yemeni Minister of Youth and Sports, confirmed the casualties in reports cited by Al Arabiya. He noted that the prime minister and other ministers who were present at the complex at the time of the strike were not harmed.
Despite the assault, reports indicate that government officials intend to remain in Aden.
Witnesses informed Reuters of powerful explosions occurring near the presidential compound, while the Associated Press reported at least six separate explosions across the interim capital.
Local security sources stated that air defense systems attempted to intercept the incoming missiles. However, either the direct strikes or falling debris from the interceptions caused significant damage to guard facilities surrounding the palace.
This incident occurs amidst rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi movement. Hours prior to the Aden attack, the Saudi-led coalition announced that Houthi forces had attempted to target multiple sites within the Kingdom, including oil facilities, ports, and airports.
