You can assign virtually any audio clip as your wake-up tone. Here is the step-by-step process for both Apple Music tracks and custom files.

Selecting the right alarm tone is a balancing act. The sound must be rousing enough to pull you from sleep, yet not so jarring that it ruins your mood before the day begins. Many of the default iOS options lean toward the abrasive side, but iOS provides straightforward methods to replace them with something more personal.

Using an Apple Music Track

If you subscribe to Apple Music, you have access to a catalog of over 100 million songs, any of which can serve as your alarm. Start by adding your chosen track to your library: open the Apple Music app, search for the song, and tap the + icon to save it.

Next, open the Clock app and navigate to the Alarm tab. Create a new alarm or edit an existing one. Tap Sound > Pick a Song, locate the track in your library, select it, and confirm by tapping Back followed by Save in the top-right corner.

Using Any Audio File (iOS 26 and Later)

For complete freedom—such as using a downloaded sound effect, a GarageBand creation, or a voice memo—you must first save the audio file to the Files app.

Beginning with iOS 26, Apple streamlined this workflow significantly. Locate the audio file in Files, long-press it, and select Share > Use as Ringtone. (If the clip exceeds 30 seconds, iOS will prompt you to trim it.) This action sets the file as your default ringtone, though you can revert that change later in Settings.

With the tone now in your system sounds, return to the Clock app. Open your desired alarm, tap Sound, and select your custom audio from the list. The alarm is now configured.

Because the Use as Ringtone action lives in the system share sheet, you can also convert audio received via Messages, Mail, or AirDrop directly into an alarm tone. Whether it is a clip from a friend’s voice note or a recording of your own voice captured in Voice Memos, the process remains identical: share the file, choose Use as Ringtone, and assign it in the Clock app.
