Inaki Williams, forward for Athletic Club, has announced his retirement from international duty with the Ghana national team.
The 32-year-old earned 28 caps and scored twice for the Black Stars since his debut in September 2022, featuring at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Williams appeared twice at this year’s World Cup, where Ghana were eliminated in the last 32 by Colombia.
In a social media post, Williams stated: “I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud, and with the peace of mind of knowing I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams chose to represent Ghana after previously playing at youth level and for Spain in a 2016 senior friendly. His younger brother, Nico Williams, also of Athletic Club, opted to represent Spain, winning the World Cup and European Championship with La Roja.
Williams’ decision comes shortly after the confirmation of Carlos Queiroz’s return as Ghana coach in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Reflecting on his international career, Williams noted that his time with Ghana had given him “much more than football,” adding: “It allowed me to come back home, feel closer to my roots, and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love always shown me,” he said. “Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am.”
