India Considers Follow-On in Colombo Test as Rain Threatens Playing Time

India are weighing the option of enforcing the follow-on in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, with bowling coach Morne Morkel confirming the visitors could send the hosts back in if they claim the remaining two wickets cheaply on the fourth morning.

At stumps on day three, Sri Lanka had reached 265 for 8 after 83.4 overs, still trailing by 238 runs following India’s first-innings declaration at 503 for 9. The hosts require a further 39 runs to avoid the follow-on, with Sonal Dinusha unbeaten on 85 alongside Lahiru Kumara.

Weather, rather than pitch deterioration, is the primary driver behind India’s thinking. Only 222 overs have been possible across the first three days, with day three truncated to just 80.4 overs. With further interruptions forecast, India are keen to maximise the time available to bowl Sri Lanka out twice and force a result. Morkel outlined the team’s intentions clearly after the day’s play.

“That will be the first prize — that we can get those two wickets tomorrow early,” the South African said.

The bowling coach explained that the repeated stop-start nature of rain-affected play consumes valuable time, potentially making a second Indian innings less attractive than immediately asking Sri Lanka to bat again.

India also hold the advantage of a relatively new second new ball, which was only 3.2 overs old when play ended. Prasidh Krishna has been among the leading wicket-takers, while Manav Suthar has also made an impact as India chipped away at Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order.

There is, however, a calculated risk. The Colombo surface continues to offer good batting conditions, meaning India could face another lengthy bowling stint if Sri Lanka follow on. India last enforced the follow-on against West Indies in Delhi in 2025, eventually requiring 118.5 overs in the second innings to secure victory.

On this occasion, though, the weather alters the equation. Should India remove the final two Sri Lankan wickets swiftly, the follow-on could give Shubman Gill’s side the best chance of forcing a result before rain claims more playing time.
